Choosing your new wood floors is an exciting part of any home renovation, however, with so many options available at FlooReno, it can be hard to decide which is best for you. We're here to make the selection process at least a bit easier! Our flooring experts have outlined some of the properties of different types of wood floors available so you can select the type and finish that suits your aesthetic, budget and lifestyle.
Types Of Wood Flooring:
There are 2 main types of wood floors, solid and engineered. Both have slightly different compositions and properties that make them suitable for different areas of the home.Solid Hardwood Flooring
- Composition: Made from a single piece of natural wood, solid hardwood offers timeless beauty and authenticity.
- Qualities: Very durable and can last 30–100 years with proper care. It can be refinished multiple times, making it a great long-term investment. However, it is sensitive to humidity and can warp in damp or moist environments.
- Best Spaces: Excellent for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas with stable moisture levels. Avoid installing it in basements, bathrooms, or kitchens.
Engineered Hardwood Flooring
- Composition: Composed of a real hardwood veneer bonded to a core made of high-quality plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF), providing excellent stability.
- Qualities: More resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations, compared to solid hardwood. Although it cannot be refinished as many times as solid wood, it is more environmentally friendly and performs better in areas of high or changing humidity.
- Best Spaces: Perfect for basements, kitchens, or other areas with varying humidity levels. It's also ideal over concrete subfloors since the flexibility in installation methods allows it to be floated or glued down.
Best Types of Wood Species for Flooring:
When it comes to wood flooring, selecting the right species is key to achieving the perfect balance of beauty, durability, and functionality. Here are three of the best wood types for flooring:Oak Flooring
Red Oak:
Known for its warm tones and prominent grain patterns, red oak is extremely versatile, making it suitable for both traditional and modern interiors. Its durability, with a Janka hardness rating of 1,290, makes it ideal for high-traffic areas like living rooms and hallways.White Oak:
Slightly harder than red oak, white oak boasts a Janka rating of 1,360, with a sleek and subtle grain and cooler undertones. Naturally resistant to wear, it is perfect for dining rooms, entryways, and other high-traffic areas.Maple Flooring
- Appearance: Light in colour, maple features a creamy tone with a smooth, subtle grain pattern, which makes it very attractive for modern/contemporary and minimalist designs.
- Durability: With a Janka hardness rating that can range from 700 to 1,450 depending on the species, maple is a durable option that holds up well in kitchens, family rooms, and other active areas of the home.
Hickory Flooring
- Appearance: Hickory has gained much popularity because of its bold grain patterns with rich colour variations that give a character-rich, rustic look that can warm up any room.
- Durability: As one of the hardest domestic woods with a Janka rating of 1,820, hickory is highly durable and perfect for high-traffic areas or homes with pets and children. Because it's so hard, it can take much wear and tear from everyday traffic, so it can be perfectly fit for hallways and living rooms.
Getting the Right Finish
The type of finish you select will make all the difference in appearance and feel for your wood floors. It is not all about protection; it is about style and character. Following are two popular finish options you could consider:- Matte Finish: The matte finish shows off the natural beauty of the wood with a modern, understated look that works well in casual or contemporary spaces.
- Satin Finish: Satin shows a subtle shine that is the perfect balance between class and practicality, suitable for nearly any room.
