Answers To Your Questions
Titebond FAQs.
Gluing wood with a moisture content above 10% can slow the drying process of Titebond Original, II, and III wood glues. If the wood has more than 16% moisture content, the glue may not dry at all. Water-based glues typically take up to 24 hours to fully cure before they can be machined. “Sunken glue joints” can occur if assemblies are machined before the glue lines reach moisture equilibrium.
If Titebond Wood Glues spill on clothing, immediately wet the affected area with water and keep it wet while rubbing off the adhesive. Do not dry the clothing until all adhesive is removed, as heat will set the glue permanently into the fabric. Dried Titebond II and III glues are particularly difficult to remove. A mixture of acetone, water, and vinegar can soften the adhesive, but scraping will be necessary to remove most of it.
Before applying Titebond, ensure the surface is clean and dry, free from any oil, dirt, or other contaminants.
Titebond III offers superior performance, especially for outdoor applications or in cooler temperatures where moisture resistance is crucial. It provides Type I water resistance, a longer working time for precise alignment of substrates, superior strength, and a low chalk temperature. These features make it versatile for both interior and exterior projects.
Titebond glues are designed to bond bare wood. Paint or stain blocks the wood pores, preventing the glue from penetrating effectively. While some Titebond glues might bond painted or stained surfaces, the bond strength will depend on the paint’s adhesion to the wood. For the best results, ensure all substrates are free from paint, stain, or sealer.
Yes, Titebond wood glues are safe and emit no harmful fumes. They comply with ASTM D4236 for safe use in arts and crafts. Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue and Titebond II Premium Wood Glue are also approved for indirect food contact, making them ideal for projects like cutting boards.
